For this reason, fly control can help limit spread.ĭr. If left to what is presented traditionally a horse owner is to conclude that aural plaque is a result from external forces, beyond the scope of prevention, and that topical pharmaceuticals varying in side effects are the only option for treatment and prevention. They also likely act as a mechanical vector, carrying virus between horses, spreading the infection. Fly bites damage the skin, providing an entry point for the virus. The virus that causes aural plaques is likely spread between horses by tiny black flies (Simulium spp.). The plaques are slightly raised off the surface of the skin, and have a distinctive crusty or flaky texture. In one study, horses required eight to 30 treatments for complete resolution. What are Ear Papillomas Aural (relating to the ear) plaques (or ear papillomas) are unsightly white or yellow patches of skin that appear on one, or both, of the sensitive inner ears of a horse. The ears need to be thoroughly cleaned before the cream is applied (usually requiring sedation), and this has to be repeated every two days. Aural plaques are flat papillomas that occur mainly on the inside of the pinna of horses in the Northern Hemisphere. Successful treatment with this topical cream is intense and requires commitment. Treatment with imiquimod cream was successful in a few published studies. They are caused by one of several strains of papilloma virus. There is one scientific report of a 28-year-old Thoroughbred gelding that had aural plaques and a common skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.Ĭurrently, there is no commercial vaccine available to prevent infection and plaques don’t disappear on their own. The growths are most likely aural plaques, also known as papillary acanthoma or ear papillomas. However, with these ear masses, the transition to cancer is rare. Any time the normal cell cycle is deranged, as it is with aural plaques, the possibility of cancer exists.
